Plant some parsley for the butterflies

If you love swallowtail butterflies, and who doesn’t, then plant some parsley in your garden.

The butterfly lays her eggs on parsley, which plays host to a lovely caterpillar of green and black, with yellow and blue features. As an infant, it will look like a spot of bird poop. But as it matures, it changes to a black and white worm, then to the lovely caterpillar, which will gorge for a couple of weeks, then pupate.

For feeding (if you want them to hang around), the butterflies are attracted to trumpet-shaped flowers. They also love heart-leaved and golden Alexander (a member of the parsley family), wild carrot and Queen Anne’s lace, angelica. The dreaded goutweed is also a member of this family.
